How to Set Up and Customize Volume Discount

Volume Discount lets you display multiple purchase options on a product page, encouraging customers to buy more in exchange for discounts, free products, or bundle offers.
You can use different Bar types to create:

  • Standard quantity discounts
  • Fixed total-price offers
  • Multi-product bundles
  • Buy X, Get Y Free offers
  • Free gifts
  • Upsell offers
  • Quantity discounts that let customers mix and match products

This guide explains how to configure the three Bar types available in Volume Discount, how prices are calculated, how product mixing works, and how to customize images and overall styles.

1. Create or Edit a Volume Discount

Create a new Volume Discount or open an existing one to configure its settings.
The configuration page is divided into two main areas:

  • Left side: Configure the title, Bars, discounts, products, and styles
  • Right side: Use Preview to check the customer-facing result in real time

You can add multiple Bars so customers can choose between different purchase options.
For example:

  • 1 Pack: Buy 1 item
  • 2 Pack: Buy 2 items and receive 10% off each item
  • 3 Pack: Buy 3 items for a total of $99
  • Complete the upsell: Buy the current product together with selected complementary products
  • Buy 5, Get 1 Free: Select 6 items and receive the lowest-priced item for free

[Insert image: Volume Discount configuration page overview]

Configure purchase options on the left and check the customer-facing result in Preview on the right.

2. Set the Block Title and Price Display

In the basic Volume Discount settings, you can configure the title displayed above the Bars and decide how original prices and savings are calculated.

Set the Block title

Enter the text you want to display above all Bars in the Block title field.
For example:
Buy more, save more
Block title only supports static text. Dynamic variables cannot be used in this field.

Use the product’s Compare-at price

When Use product compare-at price is enabled, the product’s Compare-at price is used to calculate and display the original price, savings amount, and savings percentage.
For example, suppose the product has:

  • Selling price: $60
  • Compare-at price: $80

Even if a Bar does not have an additional discount, customers may still see savings based on the difference between the selling price and the Compare-at price.

When Use product compare-at price is enabled, the total savings displayed on the page may include both:
  • The existing difference between the product price and Compare-at price
  • The additional discount created by the current Volume Discount offer

Therefore, the displayed savings percentage may not represent only the discount configured for the current Bar.
[Insert image: Block title and Compare-at price settings]

Set the Volume Discount title and decide whether the product’s Compare-at price should be included when calculating savings.

3. Understand the Three Bar Types

Click + Add bar to add one of the following Bar types:

  • Quantity break
  • Bundle upsell
  • Buy X, get Y free

[Insert image: Add bar type selector]

Choose Quantity break, Bundle upsell, or Buy X, get Y free to create different purchase options.

Quantity break

Use Quantity break to create standard quantity-based offers, such as:

  • Buy 1 item at the regular price
  • Buy 2 items and receive 10% off each item
  • Buy 3 items and receive 20% off each item

The 1 Pack, 2 Pack, and 3 Pack examples in this guide are all Quantity break Bars.
When Volume discount bundle with other products is enabled, customers can also mix eligible products from the second item onward.
The first item always remains the product the customer is currently viewing.

Bundle upsell

Use Bundle upsell to combine the current product with one or more predefined products.
You can configure the quantity and discount separately for each product.

Buy X, get Y free

Use this Bar to create an offer where customers select X + Y items and the lowest-priced Y items are free.
For example:
Buy 5, get 1 free
By default, all items in this Bar use the current product.
When Volume discount bundle with other products is enabled, the first item remains the current product. Customers can mix other eligible products from the second item onward.
The system calculates the price based on the products the customer actually selects and deducts the lowest-priced item or items.

4. Set Up a Quantity Break Bar

Select Quantity break to add a standard quantity-based purchase option.

Set the purchase quantity

Enter the number of products included in the Bar under Quantity.
For example:

Bar

Quantity

1 Pack

1

2 Pack

2

3 Pack

3

Text such as “1 Pack” or “2 Pack” in the Bar title is only display text. The actual purchase quantity is controlled by the Quantity setting.

Choose a Price method

Use the Price menu to choose how the Bar price is calculated.

Price method

Description

Default

Uses the product’s current selling price without an additional discount

Percentage off

Applies a percentage discount to each item

Amount off

Deducts a fixed amount from each item

Specific price

Sets a specific total price for the entire Bar

Cheapest item discount

Applies a discount to the lowest-priced item in the Bar; mainly used when products are mixed

[Insert image: Price method menu]

Select the appropriate price calculation method for the purchase option.

Default

When Default is selected, the Bar does not apply an additional Volume Discount. The price is calculated using the product’s current selling price.
For example:

  • Quantity: 1
  • Price: Default

This means the customer buys one item at its current selling price.
If Use product compare-at price is enabled, the page may still display an original price and savings based on the difference between the selling price and Compare-at price.

Percentage off

Select Percentage off to apply a percentage discount to each item.
For example:

  • Quantity: 2
  • Price: Percentage off
  • Discount per item: 10% off

The customer buys two items and receives 10% off each item.

Amount off

Select Amount off to deduct a fixed amount from each item.
For example:

  • Quantity: 3
  • Price: Amount off
  • Discount per item: $5 off

The customer buys three items, and $5 is deducted from each item.

Amount off applies the specified discount to each item. It is not deducted only once from the total Bar price.

Specific price

Select Specific price to set a fixed total price for the entire Bar.
For example:

  • Quantity: 3
  • Price: Specific price
  • Total price: $99

When the customer selects the 3 Pack:

  • The customer receives three items
  • The three items cost $99 in total
  • The system does not calculate the price as $99 × 3

If the original total price of the three products is $180, the savings are:
$180 − $99 = $81

Specific price defines the total price for the complete Bar quantity, not the price of each item. If you change Quantity, remember to review and update Total price.

[Insert image: Specific price configuration]

Set the 3 Pack to a total Specific price of $99 and verify the final price and savings in Preview.

Cheapest item discount

Select Cheapest item discount to apply a discount to the lowest-priced item in the Bar.
This price method is mainly intended for product-mixing scenarios created with Volume discount bundle with other products.
For example, suppose a customer selects three products priced at:

  • $30
  • $25
  • $20

If the cheapest item receives 50% off, the discount is applied to the $20 product:
$20 × 50% = $10
The final price is:
$30 + $25 + $10 = $65
To make the cheapest item free, set the discount to:
100% off

If customers are only buying multiple units of the same product at the same price, Cheapest item discount is usually unnecessary. It is more useful when a Bar can contain products or variants with different prices.

Customize the title and dynamic text

You can customize:

  • Title: The main Bar title, such as 2 Pack
  • Subtitle: Supporting text displayed below the title
  • Label: Promotional text displayed beside the title
  • Badge style: The appearance of the Badge
  • Badge text: The text displayed inside the Badge

Some fields support dynamic variables. Click the {} button beside a supported field to see the variables available for that field.
For example:
Save {{saved_amount}}
The customer-facing page may display:
Save $20.00

Dynamic variables are only available in fields that display and support the {} button. Block title does not support dynamic variables.

Set the default Bar

Enable Selected by default to have the Bar selected automatically when the customer opens the product page.

We recommend enabling Selected by default for only one Bar to avoid having multiple options configured as the default selection.

[Insert image: Quantity break Bar settings]

Configure the Quantity break quantity, Price method, text, and default selection.

5. Let Customers Mix Products Within a Volume Discount Bar

By default, every item position in a Volume Discount Bar uses the product currently being viewed.
When Volume discount bundle with other products is enabled, the following Bar types support mixing other eligible products:

  • Quantity break
  • Buy X, get Y free

However, the first item always remains the product the customer is currently viewing.
Customers cannot replace the first item. Starting from the second item, they can click Choose and select another eligible product or variant from the popup.

The first item cannot be replaced through the Choose product popup. Eligible for bundling only controls which alternative products are available for the second and subsequent item positions.

How product mixing works in Quantity break

For example, in a 3 Pack, the first item is fixed as the current product.
The default combination is:

  • 3 units of the current product

After product mixing is enabled, customers can create combinations such as:

  • 1 current product + 2 other products
  • 2 current products + 1 other product
  • 3 current products

Customers cannot replace all three items with other products because the first item must remain the current product.
The alternative products occupy positions within the three-item quantity. They are not added on top of the existing three items.

How product mixing works in Buy X, get Y free

For example, configure:

  • Buy: 2 qty
  • Get: 1 qty free

The customer must select three items in total.
After product mixing is enabled:

  • The first item remains the current product
  • The second and third items can also remain the current product
  • The customer can use Choose to replace the second and third items with other eligible products or variants

Possible combinations include:

  • 3 current products
  • 2 current products + 1 other product
  • 1 current product + 2 other products

The system calculates the total using the three products the customer actually selects and deducts the lowest-priced item.

Set the eligible product range

After enabling Volume discount bundle with other products, use Eligible for bundling to control which products are available in the Choose product popup.
Available options include:

  • All products except selected: All products can be selected except the products you exclude
  • Specific selected products: Only manually selected products appear in the popup
  • Products in selected collections: Only products from the selected Collections appear in the popup

For example, when using Specific selected products:

  1. Select Specific selected products
  2. Click Select more products
  3. Select the products customers are allowed to mix
  4. Click View selected to review the selected products
Products configured under Eligible for bundling are only available for the second and subsequent item positions. The first item remains the product the customer is currently viewing.

Choose products that work well with the current product and have the correct price and inventory settings.

Customize the product selection entry

You can also customize how customers access product selection, including:

  • Entry image
  • Image size
  • Button text
  • Button color
  • Button text color
  • Whether to display the product name
  • Whether to display only the selected product’s price
  • Content and styles used in the Choose product popup

When customers click Choose, they can only select products or variants included in the Eligible for bundling range.
[Insert image: Volume discount bundle with other products settings]

Use Eligible for bundling to control which products appear in the Choose product popup. The first item always remains the current product.

[Insert image: Customer-facing Quantity break product mixing]

The first item remains the current product, while customers can select different products for the remaining positions.

[Insert image: Customer-facing Buy X, get Y free product mixing]

After product mixing is enabled, the first item remains the current product and the other positions can use different eligible products.

[Insert image: Choose product popup]

Customers use the Choose product popup to select products or variants included in the Eligible for bundling range.

Product mixing versus Add upsell

Product mixing and Add upsell are separate features.

Feature

Effect on the Bar quantity

Volume discount bundle with other products

The first item remains the current product. Other products occupy positions within the Bar and count toward its quantity requirement

Add upsell

Adds an optional product outside the Bar’s required quantity

For example, in a 3 Pack:

  • The first item remains the current product
  • Mixed products are included within the three-item quantity
  • Upsell products are added in addition to the three-item quantity
Enable product mixing when customers should choose different products from the second item onward. Use Add upsell when you want to recommend an additional product after the customer has completed the Bar.

6. Add a Main Image to Each Bar

You can add a different image to each Bar to help customers understand the quantity included in each option.
For example:

  • 1 Pack: Display one bag of coffee
  • 2 Pack: Display two bags of coffee
  • 3 Pack: Display three bags of coffee

Add or replace an image

Click Add image or Edit image in the Bar to open the image settings.
You can adjust:

  • Size: Image size in px
  • Corner radius: Image corner radius
  • Preview: Check how the image appears with the title, Label, and price

Click Confirm to apply your changes or Cancel to discard them.

A Bar’s main image is for presentation only. It does not determine the purchase quantity. The actual quantity is controlled by the Bar’s Quantity, Buy, and Get settings. We recommend using consistent backgrounds, sizes, and corner radiuses for all Bar images.

[Insert image: Bar main-image settings]

Add an image to the purchase option and adjust its size and corner radius.

Check images across different Bars

After setting the image for each Bar, review the complete result in Preview.
[Insert image: Images for 1 Pack, 2 Pack, and 3 Pack]

Use different images to illustrate each purchase quantity and verify the result in Preview.

7. Add a Free Gift to a Bar

Click Add free gift in a Bar to add a separate free product to that purchase option.
You can configure:

  • Product: Select the free gift
  • Quantity: Set the gift quantity
  • Text: Customize the gift message
  • Image display: Decide whether to show the gift image
  • Edit image: Configure the image used in the Free gift area
  • Other display settings available in the Free gift section

For example, you can offer an additional free product only when the customer selects the 3 Pack.

Configure the gift image

Click Edit image in the Free gift section to adjust:

  • Image size
  • Image corner radius
  • The result displayed in Preview
Edit image inside the Free gift section only controls the image in the Free gift message area. It does not modify the Bar’s main image.

Adjust the size and corner radius of the image used in the Free gift area.

8. Add an Upsell Product to a Bar

You can add an Upsell product to an individual Volume Discount Bar.

Because each Bar has its own Upsell settings, you can offer different additional products, quantities, or discounts depending on the option selected by the customer.

For example, this Volume Discount campaign contains three Bars:

  • 1 Pack: Standard price
  • 2 Pack: Save 15%
  • 3 Pack: Save 30%

In this example, an Upsell product is added specifically to the 3 Pack Bar. Customers who select the 3 Pack option can add one more product with a 20% discount.

[Insert image: The 3 Pack Bar with its Upsell settings]

Add an Upsell to the 3 Pack Bar

  1. Find and expand the 3 Pack Bar.
  2. Click Add upsell.
  3. Select the product you want to offer. In this example, the Upsell product is Sample Coffee #8.
  4. Set the Upsell quantity. In this example, the quantity is 1.
  5. Under Price, select Percentage off.
  6. Set Discount per item to 20%.
  7. Enter the customer-facing text:

Add with a 20% discount

  1. Enable Image display if you want to show an image beside the Upsell offer.
  2. Enable Visible only when bar is selected if the Upsell should only appear when customers select the 3 Pack Bar.

After completing these settings, customers can select the checkbox beside the Upsell offer to add the additional product to their purchase.

[Insert image: Customer-facing 3 Pack option with the 20% off Upsell]

Available Upsell Settings

You can configure the following settings for each Upsell:

  • Product: Select the product offered as the Upsell.
  • Quantity: Set how many units of the Upsell product will be added.
  • Price: Choose how the Upsell discount is calculated.
  • Discount per item: Set the discount applied to each Upsell item.
  • Text: Customize the message displayed to customers.
  • Image display: Show or hide the Upsell image.
  • Edit image: Replace or customize the image displayed in the offer.
  • Selected by default: Automatically select the Upsell for the customer.
  • Visible only when bar is selected: Show the Upsell only when its parent Bar is selected.

Show the Upsell Only When the 3 Pack Bar Is Selected

Enable Visible only when bar is selected if you do not want the Upsell to appear under the other purchase options.

With this setting enabled:

  • Selecting 1 Pack does not display the Upsell configured inside the 3 Pack Bar.
  • Selecting 2 Pack does not display the Upsell configured inside the 3 Pack Bar.
  • Selecting 3 Pack displays the offer to add Sample Coffee #8 with a 20% discount.

Visible only when bar is selected controls whether the Upsell is displayed. Selected by default controls whether the displayed Upsell product is automatically selected. These are two different settings.

If the 3 Pack Bar is selected by default, its Upsell can appear as soon as the page loads because its parent Bar is already selected.

Add Different Upsells to Different Bars

Each Volume Discount Bar has its own independent Upsell settings.

For example, you can:

  • Add one Upsell product to the 2 Pack Bar.
  • Add a different Upsell product to the 3 Pack Bar.
  • Configure a different quantity, discount, text, or image for each offer.
  • Use Visible only when bar is selected to display only the Upsell belonging to the selected Bar.

To configure another offer, open the corresponding Bar, click Add upsell, and complete its Upsell settings separately.

This can be configured directly inside the Volume Discount campaign. You do not need to create a Mix & Match Bundle or a conditional multi-step bundle.

9. Set Up a Bundle Upsell Bar

Select Bundle upsell to combine the current product with one or more predefined complementary products.

Choose a product layout

Bundle upsell provides different display layouts, such as:

  • Horizontal list layout: Suitable for showing product names, prices, and detailed product information
  • Side-by-side card layout: Suitable for displaying multiple products next to each other

Choose the layout based on the number of products and available page space.

Customize the text

You can configure:

  • Title
  • Subtitle
  • Badge style
  • Badge text
  • Label
  • Selected by default

Supported dynamic variables update according to the current products and discounts.
For example:
Save {{saved_amount}}!
Preview may display:
Save $20.00!

Configure the Default product

Default product represents the main product on the current product page.
You can configure:

  • Product quantity
  • Show quantity selector
  • Hide product price
  • Price
  • Discount per item

You can leave the main product’s Price as Default to use its current selling price or configure a separate discount for it.

Add a complementary product

Click + Select a product and select the product you want to sell with the current product.
For each complementary product, you can configure:

  • Quantity
  • Price
  • Discount per item

For example:

  • Price: Percentage off
  • Discount per item: 40% off

This gives the complementary product a 40% discount when it is purchased as part of the Bundle upsell.

Add multiple products to one Bundle upsell

Click + Add product to add another product to the same Bundle upsell Bar.
Each product can have its own:

  • Product selection
  • Quantity
  • Pricing method
  • Discount per item
  • Delete action

For example:

  • Default product: Quantity 1 with 10% off each item
  • Sample Coffee #11: Quantity 1 with 50% off each item

Products in the same Bundle upsell do not need to use the same pricing rule.

Review the complete bundle

After adding multiple products, Preview displays them together in the same Bundle upsell Bar.
The “+” symbol between products indicates that the products are included together. It is not a button for adding another product.
Preview displays:

  • The discounted price of each product
  • Original prices or Compare-at prices
  • The final price of the complete bundle
  • The total savings
  • The selected state of the Bar
Products in Bundle upsell are predefined by the merchant. If customers should choose their own products from the second item onward, use a Quantity break or Buy X, get Y free Bar with product mixing enabled.

[Insert image: Bundle upsell basic settings]

Configure the Bundle upsell layout, text, main product, complementary products, and discounts.

[Insert image: Bundle upsell with multiple products]

Add multiple products to the same Bundle upsell and configure a separate quantity and discount for each product.

10. Set Up a Buy X, Get Y Free Bar

Select Buy X, get Y free to create an offer where customers select X + Y items and the lowest-priced Y items are free.
For example:

  • Buy: 5 qty
  • Get: 1 qty free

The customer receives six items in total, and the lowest-priced item is free.
When product mixing is disabled, all items use the current product.
When Volume discount bundle with other products is enabled, the first item remains the current product. Customers can choose other eligible products or variants from the second item onward.

Customize the text

You can configure:

  • Title: For example, Buy 5, get 1 free!
  • Subtitle: For example, You save {{saved_total}}
  • Badge style
  • Badge text
  • Label: For example, SAVE {{saved_percentage}}
  • Selected by default

Click the {} button beside a supported field to view and insert available dynamic variables.
Preview may display:

  • You save $180.00
  • SAVE 38%

Price calculation without product mixing

Suppose the current product has:

  • Selling price: $60
  • Buy: 5 items
  • Get: 1 item free

The customer receives six units of the current product.
The price is calculated as:
$60 × 6 − $60 = $300
Because all six products have the same price, one $60 product is deducted and the customer pays $300.

Price calculation with product mixing

When Volume discount bundle with other products is enabled:

  • The first item remains the current product
  • Customers can use Choose to select other products or variants from the second item onward
  • Eligible for bundling controls which products appear in the popup

The system:

  1. Calculates the total price using the products the customer actually selects
  2. Identifies the lowest-priced product
  3. Deducts the lowest-priced product from the total

For example:

  • Buy: 2 qty
  • Get: 1 qty free

The customer must select three products. The first item remains the current product.
If the selected products cost:

  • $30
  • $25
  • $20

The price is:
$30 + $25 + $20 − $20 = $55
The customer receives three products and pays $55. The $20 product is free.
In another example, the selected products cost:

  • $30
  • $25
  • $40

The lowest-priced product is $25, so the calculation is:
$30 + $25 + $40 − $25 = $70
The customer pays $70.

When product mixing is enabled for Buy X, get Y free, the free product is not determined by its position. The system uses the prices of the products the customer actually selects and deducts the lowest-priced product.

If Get 2 Free is configured, the system deducts the two lowest-priced products.
Although the first item remains the current product, it still participates in the lowest-price comparison. If the current product is the lowest-priced item, it may become one of the free products.

How Compare-at price affects savings

Suppose the current product has:

  • Selling price: $60
  • Compare-at price: $80
  • Buy: 5 items
  • Get: 1 item free

The customer pays:
$60 × 5 = $300
The customer receives six items.
If Use product compare-at price is enabled, the original price may be calculated using the Compare-at price of all six products:
$80 × 6 = $480
The result is:

  • Final price: $300
  • Original price: $480
  • Savings: $480 − $300 = $180
  • Savings percentage: $180 ÷ $480 = 37.5%

After rounding, the page may display:
SAVE 38%

The free item’s value is included in the total savings. When Use product compare-at price is enabled, the difference between each product’s selling price and Compare-at price may also be included.

When product mixing is enabled, selected products may have different prices. The displayed original price, final price, and savings update according to the customer’s selections.

Add other promotional elements

A Buy X, get Y free Bar also supports:

  • Add image
  • Add free gift
  • Add upsell

These options have different purposes:

  • Get Y Free: Deducts the lowest-priced Y items within the Bar
  • Add free gift: Adds a separate predefined gift outside the Bar quantity
  • Add upsell: Offers an optional additional product outside the Bar quantity

[Insert image: Buy X, get Y free settings]

Configure a Buy 5, Get 1 Free option and customize its savings message, promotional label, and default selection.

[Insert image: Buy X, get Y free product mixing and price calculation]

The first item remains the current product, while customers can select different products for the other positions. The system deducts the lowest-priced item.

  • Are the Bars displayed in the correct order?
  • Is only one Bar selected by default?
  • Are selected and unselected states easy to distinguish?
  • Are the Title, Subtitle, Label, and Badge texts correct?
  • Are discounted prices, original prices, and savings calculated correctly?
  • Does Specific price display as the total price for the Bar?
  • Does Compare-at price affect the displayed savings?
  • Do Bar images match the configured Quantity, Buy, and Get values?
  • Are the Free gift product and quantity correct?
  • Are the Upsell product, discount, and display conditions correct?
  • Are Bundle upsell products and totals correct?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add an Upsell only to the 3 Pack option?

Yes. Open the 3 Pack Bar and click Add upsell.

The Upsell belongs specifically to that Bar. Enable Visible only when bar is selected if you want it to appear only after the customer selects 3 Pack.

Can I give the Upsell product a different discount?

Yes. The Upsell has its own pricing settings.

For example, the 3 Pack Bar can provide a 30% Volume Discount, while its additional Upsell product receives a separate 20% discount.

Can different Bars offer different Upsell products?

Yes. Each Bar has independent Upsell settings.

You can add one product to the 2 Pack Bar and a different product to the 3 Pack Bar. Their quantities, discounts, text, images, and display conditions can also be configured separately.

How can I hide the Upsell under the other Bars?

Enable Visible only when bar is selected inside the Upsell settings.

The Upsell will then be displayed only while its parent Bar is selected.

What is the difference between “Selected by default” and “Visible only when bar is selected”?

Selected by default determines whether the Upsell product is automatically selected.

Visible only when bar is selected determines whether the Upsell offer is displayed only when its parent Bar is selected.
