How to Create and Manage Discount Rules in the Mix & Match Bundle Editor

Discount Rules allow you to offer promotions based on the number of products selected, the selected product amount, or required product conditions.
This guide explains how to create, edit, and delete Discount Rules in the Mix & Match Bundle Editor.
To understand the two pricing systems available in the editor, see:
How Pricing Works in Mix & Match Bundle Editor

Which Bundle Types Support Discount Rules?

Discount Rules are available for:

  • Build a Box
  • Buy More Save More

The following Bundle types use Box size & price instead:

  • Single Box
  • Multi Box

Step 1: Open Discounts

Open the Mix & Match Bundle you want to configure.
In the editor’s left-side menu, click:
Discounts
This area allows you to create and manage the discount rules for the Bundle.

Step 2: Add a Discount Rule

Click the button to add a new Discount Rule.
Each rule contains:

  • A trigger type
  • A trigger threshold
  • A discount type
  • A discount value, when applicable
  • Optional required product conditions

When customers meet the rule conditions, the corresponding promotion is automatically applied.

Step 3: Choose the Trigger Type

Discount Rules support two main trigger types.

Quantity

The promotion is triggered by the number of products selected.
Examples:

  • Select 2 items and get 10% off
  • Select 3 items and get 15% off
  • Select 4 items and get 20% off

Quantity rules are useful for:

  • Buy more, save more promotions
  • Pick any number of products
  • Tiered quantity discounts

Amount

The promotion is triggered by the total value of the selected products.
Examples:

  • Spend $100 and save $10
  • Spend $200 and get 15% off
  • Spend $300 and get free shipping

Amount rules are useful for:

  • Spend-and-save promotions
  • Increasing average order value
  • Rewarding customers based on the selected product amount

Step 4: Set the Trigger Threshold

After choosing the trigger type, enter the required threshold.

Quantity example

Quantity: 3

The rule is triggered when the customer selects the required number of products.

Amount example

Amount: $100

The rule is triggered when the value of the selected products reaches the required amount.
The currency shown in the editor depends on the store’s currency settings.

Step 5: Choose the Discount Type

Select the promotion that should be applied when the rule conditions are met.

Percentage off

Applies a percentage discount.
Example:

Select 3 items and get 15% off

This is commonly used for tiered discounts and buy-more-save-more promotions.

Amount off

Deducts a fixed amount from the Bundle price.
Example:

Spend $100 and save $10

This is useful for spend-and-save promotions.

Specific price

Sets the selected product combination to a specific total price.
Example:

Select any 3 items for $29.99

This is useful for offers such as:

  • Any 3 for $29.99
  • Any 5 for $49.99
  • Pick X products for a fixed price

Free gift

Offers a free gift when the customer meets the rule conditions.
Example:

Select 4 items and choose a free gift

The available gift products can be configured inside the rule.

Free shipping

Provides free shipping when the conditions are met.
Example:

Spend $100 and get free shipping

The final result may also depend on the store’s Shopify shipping configuration and delivery conditions.

Cheapest item discount

Applies a discount to the lowest-priced selected item.
Example:

Select 3 items and get the cheapest item free

The cheapest item can receive a full or partial discount.

Most expensive item discount

Applies a discount to the highest-priced selected item.
Example:

Select 3 items and get 20% off the most expensive item

This is useful when the promotion should reward customers purchasing higher-priced products.

Step 6: Enter the Discount Value

Some discount types require a value.
Examples:

Percentage off

15%

Amount off

$10

Specific price

$29.99

After entering the value, check that the resulting discount matches your intended promotion.

Step 7: Add Required Products

Use Required products when the customer must select a particular product before the promotion can be unlocked.
Example:

Select at least 3 items
and include Product A
to receive 20% off

Required products are useful for promotions such as:

  • A specific main product must be selected
  • Product A must be combined with other products
  • Buy Product A and select any two additional products
  • Unlock a gift by selecting a specified product

If no Required products are configured, the rule is normally evaluated only by its Quantity or Amount threshold.

Step 8: Create Tiered Discount Rules

You can add multiple Discount Rules to create tiered promotions.
Example:

Select 2 items → 10% off
Select 3 items → 15% off
Select 4 items → 20% off

Discount Rules currently cannot be manually reordered.
For easier management, create the rules from the lowest threshold to the highest threshold.
For example:

2 items
3 items
4 items

Step 9: Edit or Delete Existing Rules

After creating a rule, you can:

  • Change its trigger type
  • Modify its threshold
  • Select a different discount type
  • Change the discount value
  • Update the Required products
  • Delete a rule that is no longer needed

Discount Rules currently cannot be dragged or manually rearranged.
If you need to change the displayed order, delete the relevant rules and recreate them in the preferred order.
Remember to save the Bundle after making changes.

Avoid Duplicate or Conflicting Rules

Avoid creating multiple rules with the same threshold but different discount results.
For example:

Select 3 items → 10% off
Select 3 items → 15% off

This creates an unclear promotion structure.
A clearer tiered setup would be:

Select 2 items → 10% off
Select 3 items → 15% off
Select 4 items → 20% off

Before publishing the Bundle, check for:

  • Duplicate thresholds
  • Incorrect discount values
  • Incorrect Required products
  • Conflicts between Quantity and Amount rules
  • Unintended gift conditions

Step 10: Preview and Test the Discount

After configuring the rules, test the Bundle on the storefront.
At minimum, test:

  • A selection below the threshold
  • A selection exactly at the threshold
  • A selection above the threshold
  • A selection that meets multiple rules
  • A selection without the Required products
  • A selection containing the Required products
  • Products with different prices
  • Different product variants
  • Removing an item after a discount has been unlocked

Also check:

  • The Bundle price
  • Discount messages
  • The Summary amount
  • The price before Add to Cart
  • The cart result
  • The final Shopify Checkout price

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I create multiple Discount Rules?

Yes.
You can create multiple rules for tiered quantity discounts, spend-based promotions, free gifts, and other rewards.

Can I manually reorder Discount Rules?

No.
Discount Rules currently cannot be dragged or manually reordered.
Create them in the preferred order. If you need to change the displayed order later, delete and recreate the relevant rules.

What happens when multiple rules are met?

The result depends on the rule types and their configuration.
Test the Bundle before publishing to confirm that the final promotion matches your intended setup.

Can I create both Quantity and Amount rules?

Yes.
However, avoid creating conditions that could produce confusing or conflicting results.
For example:

  • Select 3 items and get 10% off
  • Spend $200 and get 15% off

Test what happens when a customer meets both rules.

Can I require a specific product?

Yes.
Use Required products to make a specified product a condition of the promotion.

Can I offer both a discount and a free gift?

You can create separate rules for discounts and gifts.
Because more than one rule may be met at the same time, test the complete promotion on the storefront.

Why is the discount not being applied?

Check that:

  • The Bundle is Active
  • The rule was saved
  • The customer reached the correct Quantity or Amount threshold
  • The Required products were selected
  • The discount value is correct
  • The selected products belong to the Bundle’s Product Lists
  • The Bundle is available in the customer’s current market
  • Product variants and prices are available
  • Other cart or checkout discounts are not causing a conflict

Summary

The basic process for creating a Discount Rule is:

Open Discounts
→ Add a rule
→ Choose Quantity or Amount
→ Set the threshold
→ Choose the discount type
→ Enter the discount value
→ Add Required products if needed
→ Save and test

You can add multiple rules to build tiered quantity discounts, spend-based promotions, gifts, or other Bundle offers.
