How Shopify Discount Codes Work with Different uShopAid Bundles
Customers might find that a Shopify discount code works with one uShopAid Bundle but not another.
Whether you can prevent a discount code from applying depends mainly on how the Bundle is displayed in the cart and at checkout:
- As one item: Shopify evaluates the Bundle parent product. uShopAid’s Discount combination settings don’t apply.
- As separate items: Shopify evaluates each individual product. uShopAid’s Discount combination settings apply when a uShopAid Bundle discount is already active.
If you use a Mix & Match Bundle, check its display method from:
Bundle Settings → Bundle display type → How to display the bundle on the cart or checkout page?
This guide explains how to prevent, allow, and troubleshoot Shopify discount codes for each Bundle structure.
How can I prevent customers from using discount codes with a Bundle?
The correct method depends on whether the Bundle is displayed as one item or as separate items.
If the Bundle is displayed as one item
This applies to:
- Product Bundles
- Mix & Match Bundles displayed as
As one item
Shopify treats the Bundle as one parent product. The selected component products are nested under it and aren’t evaluated separately for product discount eligibility.
uShopAid’s Discount combination settings don’t apply to this Bundle structure.
To prevent a Shopify Product discount from applying:
- From Shopify admin, go to Discounts.
- Open or create an
Amount off productsdiscount. - Set
Applies totoSpecific productsorSpecific collections. - Don’t include the Bundle parent product or a collection containing the parent product.
Even if the component products are eligible for the discount when purchased separately, the discount won’t apply to the Bundle unless the parent product is eligible.
If the Bundle is displayed as separate items
This applies to:
- Volume Discounts
- Classic Bundles
- Mix & Match Bundles displayed as
As separate items
To prevent another Shopify discount from combining with an existing uShopAid Bundle discount:
- Go to uShopAid → Settings → Discount combination.
- Disable the discount type that you don’t want to combine:
- Disable
Product discountsto prevent other Product discounts from combining. - Disable
Order discountsto prevent Order discounts from combining. - Disable
Shipping discountsto prevent Shipping discounts from combining.
- Save the settings.
If you want to allow two discounts to combine, both discounts must permit the combination:
- uShopAid must allow the Shopify discount type.
- The Shopify discount must allow combinations with
Product discounts, because the uShopAid Bundle discount is a Product discount.
Shopify discount types
When you create a discount in Shopify, you can choose from several discount types.
Shopify discount type | What it applies to |
|---|---|
Amount off products | Specific products or collections |
Buy X get Y | Eligible products based on the Buy X get Y conditions |
Amount off order | The total order amount |
Free shipping | Shipping costs for eligible orders |
To check a discount’s type, go to: | |
Shopify admin → Discounts → Open the discount | |
Shopify uses two separate checks when a customer applies a discount code: |
- Is the discount eligible for the items in the cart?
- If a uShopAid discount is already applied, can the two discounts be combined?
First, check how the Bundle appears at checkout
The discount behavior mainly depends on how Shopify identifies the Bundle in the cart and at checkout.
uShopAid Bundles use one of two checkout structures.
The Bundle is displayed as one parent product
This structure applies to:
- Product Bundles
- Mix & Match Bundles displayed as
As one item
With this structure:
- The Bundle is displayed as one parent product.
- The selected component products are nested under the parent product.
- Shopify checks the parent product when evaluating a product discount.
- The component products aren’t treated as separate eligible items.
The Bundle products are displayed as separate items
This structure applies to:
- Volume Discounts
- Classic Bundles
- Mix & Match Bundles displayed as
As separate items
With this structure:
- Each product is a separate cart and checkout line.
- Shopify can evaluate the discount eligibility of each product.
- uShopAid’s Discount combination settings control which other discount types can be combined with the Bundle discount.
Product Bundles and Mix & Match Bundles displayed as one item
Product Bundles and Mix & Match Bundles displayed as As one item use the same cart and checkout structure.
Shopify identifies them as:
- One Bundle parent product
- Multiple component products nested under the parent
- A Bundle price assigned to the parent product
How product discount codes match these Bundles
When a customer applies an Amount off products discount code, Shopify checks whether the Bundle parent product is included in the discount’s eligible products.
Shopify doesn’t use the nested component products to determine product discount eligibility.
For example, a Product Bundle contains:
- Parent product: Bundle product test
- Component product: Black Leather Bag
- Component product: Blue Silk Tuxedo
Even if Black Leather Bag and Blue Silk Tuxedo are included under Specific products, the discount code won’t apply unless the parent product, Bundle product test, is also eligible.
Shopify displays the following message at checkout:
This discount code isn’t valid for the items in your cart.
[Insert image: Product Bundle displayed as a parent product with nested component products]

Caption: Shopify treats the Product Bundle as one parent product at checkout.
[Insert image: Product discount code rejected even though the component products are eligible]

Caption: A product discount that includes only the component products doesn’t apply to the Bundle parent product.
When can a product discount apply?
To apply a product discount to the complete Bundle, include the Bundle parent product in the discount’s eligible products or collections.
Eligible products in the Shopify discount | Can the discount match the Bundle? |
|---|---|
Only the Bundle component products | No |
The Bundle parent product | Yes |
A collection containing the parent product | Yes |
Only collections containing the component products | No |
How order discounts apply
An Amount off order discount applies to the order amount instead of a specific product.
For this reason, an order discount can apply to an order containing a Product Bundle or a Mix & Match Bundle displayed as As one item.
For example:
- Product Bundle subtotal: ¥90
- WELCOME111: 10% off the order
- Order discount: −¥9
[Insert image: WELCOME111 successfully applied to the Product Bundle order]

Caption: An order discount applies to the order subtotal without matching the nested component products.
How to prevent product discount codes from applying
If you want a discount code to apply to regular products but not to Product Bundles or Mix & Match Bundles displayed as one item:
- From Shopify admin, create an
Amount off productsdiscount. - Set
Applies totoSpecific productsorSpecific collections. - Add the regular products that should receive the discount.
- Don’t include the Bundle parent product.
Even if some component products are eligible for the discount, Shopify won’t apply it to the Bundle because the parent product is the eligible checkout item.
AnAmount off order discount applies to the order subtotal and doesn’t provide a Specific products option for excluding an individual Bundle.Bundles displayed as separate items
The following uShopAid Bundles display their products as separate cart and checkout lines:
- Volume Discounts
- Classic Bundles
- Mix & Match Bundles displayed as
As separate items
With this structure:
- Shopify recognizes each product as an individual item.
- Product discount codes can match the corresponding products.
- uShopAid Bundle discounts are applied to the eligible product lines.
- Discount combination settings determine whether other Shopify discounts can also apply.
Mix & Match Bundles displayed as separate items
For Mix & Match Bundles that support this option, you can select the checkout structure from:
Bundle Settings → Bundle display type → How to display the bundle on the cart or checkout page? → As separate items
After selecting As separate items, each product in the Bundle is displayed as an individual checkout line.
[Insert image: As one item and As separate items settings]

Caption: Choose whether the Mix & Match Bundle appears as one parent product or as separate items.
For example, a customer selects:
- Gold Bird Necklace
- Navy Sports Jacket
Both products are displayed separately at checkout, and the uShopAid Bundle discount is applied to each eligible product.
[Insert image: Mix & Match Bundle products displayed as separate checkout lines]

Caption: Each selected product is displayed separately with the uShopAid Bundle discount.
A Shopify product discount can now check whether Gold Bird Necklace or Navy Sports Jacket is included in its eligible products.
However, product eligibility alone doesn’t guarantee that the discount will apply. If a uShopAid discount is already applied, the discounts must also be allowed to combine.
Configure discount combinations in uShopAid
To control which Shopify discount types can be combined with uShopAid Bundle discounts, go to:
uShopAid → Settings → Discount combination
The following options are available:
Setting | What it allows |
|---|---|
Shipping discounts | Combines the uShopAid discount with an eligible Shopify shipping discount |
Product discounts | Combines the uShopAid discount with another eligible Shopify product discount |
Order discounts | Combines the uShopAid discount with an eligible Shopify order discount |
[Insert image: uShopAid Discount combination settings] |

Caption: Select which Shopify discount types can be combined with eligible uShopAid Bundle discounts.
These settings apply to:
- Volume Discounts
- Classic Bundles
- Mix & Match Bundles displayed as
As separate items
These settings don’t apply to:
- Product Bundles
- Mix & Match Bundles displayed as
As one item
Why an order discount code might be rejected
Suppose the uShopAid Discount combination settings are:
- Shipping discounts: Enabled
- Product discounts: Enabled
- Order discounts: Disabled
A Mix & Match Bundle has already applied the NEW MIX discount to two separate product lines.
The customer then enters WELCOME111:
- WELCOME111 is an
Amount off orderdiscount. - uShopAid doesn’t allow combinations with Order discounts.
- Shopify rejects WELCOME111 because it can’t be combined with the existing uShopAid discount.
Shopify displays:
WELCOME111 couldn’t be used with your existing discounts.
In this message, existing discounts refers to the uShopAid discount already applied to the Bundle products.
[Insert image: WELCOME111 rejected because it can’t be combined with NEW MIX]

Caption: The order discount is rejected because uShopAid doesn’t allow Order discount combinations.
Both discounts must allow the combination
Allowing the combination only in uShopAid or only in Shopify isn’t enough.
Shopify requires both discounts to allow combinations with the other discount’s type.
For example:
- The uShopAid
NEW MIXdiscount is a Product discount. - WELCOME111 is an Order discount.
To combine them:
- Enable
Order discountsin uShopAid’s Discount combination settings. - Open WELCOME111 in Shopify and allow it to combine with
Product discounts.
uShopAid allows Order discounts | WELCOME111 allows Product discounts | Result |
|---|---|---|
Yes | Yes | Can combine |
Yes | No | Can’t combine |
No | Yes | Can’t combine |
No | No | Can’t combine |
[Insert image: Combinations section of the Shopify discount] |

Caption: The Shopify order discount must also allow combinations with Product discounts.
Whether WELCOME111 can combine with other Order discounts isn’t relevant to this example. WELCOME111 must allowProduct discounts because the uShopAid Bundle discount is a Product discount. How Shopify discounts work with Volume Discounts
Products in a Volume Discount are displayed as separate checkout lines. uShopAid applies a discount to the eligible products.
Therefore:
- Product discounts are evaluated against the individual products.
- Order discounts are evaluated against the order conditions and subtotal.
- uShopAid’s Discount combination settings apply to Volume Discounts.
- Both discounts must allow the combination.
If you don’t want customers to combine an order discount code with a Volume Discount, disable Order discounts in uShopAid.
If you want to allow an order discount code:
- Enable
Order discountsin uShopAid. - Open the Shopify order discount.
- Allow it to combine with
Product discounts.
How Shopify discounts work with Classic Bundles
Products in a Classic Bundle are also displayed as separate checkout lines.
Therefore:
- Product discount eligibility is evaluated against each product.
- Order discounts are evaluated against the order conditions.
- uShopAid’s Discount combination settings apply to Classic Bundles.
- If a uShopAid discount is already applied, both discounts must allow the combination.
To prevent other product discounts from being combined with the Classic Bundle discount, disable Product discounts in uShopAid.
To prevent order discount codes from being combined with the Classic Bundle discount, disable Order discounts.
